What’s That You Said?

By Clean Hands - Safe Hands

One of the reasons our electronic hand hygiene performance system works so well is that we use a human voice to remind clinicians to clean their hands. Our patented Real-Time Voice Reminder™ is the only one on the market. We’ve seen over and over again that the voice reminder is the single most important way to get clinicians’ attention and successfully change behavior. After all, there’s no value in just monitoring hand hygiene…the goal is to improve it.

Over the last several years, we’ve partnered with hospital customers who have been quite creative in how they’ve implemented the voice. There’s always the option to use our preprogrammed female voice that says, “Please sanitize” (or “Soap and water only” for C. diff rooms). Or hospitals can record their own voice. Here are some of the ways our customers have had fun with the voice.

  • One hospital uses the voice of their well-liked CEO, which is especially effective in capturing clinicians’ attention.
  • A children’s hospital uses a child’s voice.
  • A hospital with many international team members features a variety of foreign languages.
  • One hospital changes the message to tie in with each season and holiday.
  • Another tested five different voices for two weeks apiece and let staff vote on the voice they preferred.
  • Some have a recording specific to their hospital’s hand hygiene slogan.

As with everything we do, our voice is completely flexible and can be adapted to your hospital’s unique needs and preferences. The most important thing to remember is to make it engaging to hospital staff to ensure they embrace the change. There’s no reason hand hygiene technology can’t be fun as well as effective.
